Reid loves to Read

Well it turns out we chose the right name for Reid...as his favorite pastime, next to baseball, is reading books. If he could he would pull books off his shelf in his room all day. The teacher in me is so excited...and he even babbles as he is "pretending" to read, definitely a pre-reading skill we hope for all of our children... extra chromosome or no extra chromosome.

Just as a side note, the response we have received regarding his name amongst "little people" has been quite funny...whenever kids at Luke's school ask Reid's name they always look back at me puzzled, like, "Huh? Why did you name him Read...like you read a book?".  Quite honestly I don't really remember how we decided on his name but I remember discussing names on a plane ride back from Seattle months before we were even pregnant and debated if we ever used the name if we would spell it Reid or Reed, and for us the ei won out.  Actually, we have often joked that our poor little one will always need to spell his name for people.... Toby grew up always having to tell people to spell Foreman with an e, I grew up having to tell everyone I am Cheri with a c.....and now our poor little guy will need to say, "I am Reid with an ei...Maddux with a u...and Foreman with an e. But, somehow I think he'll be able to handle it. :)

Books are so great for children. I always read to my two, even when they were only a couple of months old. It has stayed with them to this day.

Same with Cathal, and he gets very excited when he is given a book. Only yesterday evening I spend a good 20 minutes with him on two picture books, and we had so much fun.

As for spelling, my own name which is French, if spelt without an "e" at the end, is a boy's name. Leaving in Ireland all these years, I have had to explain this so often that I have adopted the following standard remark: "actually, it is spelt with an "e" at the end. You see, I am not a man, not yet!" And I accompany this with the largest smile and most discret wink I can muster. It always works, people never forget after this ;-)

Names are what makes us unique. So go for it Cheri.

I think you know by now that books are one of our very favorite past times.I too have read to my children since they were little ,little babies. They now have such a love for reading and still,no matter how late it is,how long of a day we have had ... we finish it off by reading.Books are Zoey's absolute favorite thing as well although she is no where near pretending to read ... one day.Reid is such a beautiful boy.I LOVE his hair.Absolutely love it and love him. Thanks for the call the other day Cheri. It was just the therapy I needed!

He's so precious. Love the "love" sign and all the books. Super fun way to learn. Looks like John Michael has a big brother look-alike :-) Reid looks like a regular Beach Boy :-)

Your boys are so cute! Joel is so much like Reid - he LOVES to pull ALL of the books of his bookshelf too. He can look at books for a really long time - he just loves it!

That is so great! My Luke loves reading too- and now that Ben is at school, he is starting to read to him as well, which I just love.

As for the name thing, I am glad I have given my kids short names- Ben has to sign in for school each day which is an easy job for him, but I watch the kids who are there for sometimes 4 times as long- like the Christophers and Sebastians of the world ;)

I have to spell my surname and did the same with my maiden name. Sigh!

Hi Cheri

My name is Denise and I am Ella's mom. We went to visit little Zoey the other day and I just wanted to tell you how nicely Heather talks about you and Reid. She absolutely adores Reid...she has said so many a time. She keeps telling me to check out your blog and after seeing your comment on her post, I finally remembered. I just have one thing to say...watch out Zoey....Ella may have to chase after Reid too. What a cutie!!! I look forward to following your blog now. We too live in Socal so I hope that we can all meet up one day.

Reid is one of the most handsome little guys I have ever seen.

We are so blessed aren't we??!!

Your blog is wonderful Cheri! I am the mom of two grown boys, and a pre-k-3rd grade teacher(now just subbing) and children's author. Both our boys loved being read to and I have vivid memories of time spent reading them their favorite picture books! Enjoy every moment with your boys as it all passes so quickly--in a blink! My latest book was actually inspired by our two sons. They spent much of their growing years playing baseball, and the story speaks to their love for the game, for each other, and to the giving of self. Josh was an amazing older brother to Zach, and he spent much time with him, always the teacher, and the best mentor any brother could ask for! How I miss those baseball days!

Susan....thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a message!! Funny thing is I just came back from a baseball game....I teach virtually for California Virtual Academy (K-8)....and I have a book I have been working on inspired by one of my 1st graders when I was teaching in the classroom (pre-my own kids)...hoping to one day get it published. You have inspired me to pull my draft out of the drawer, dust it off and continue to tweak it. :) It was so fun to see your comment in my inbox!
