Rest In Peace... "Zipper"

Luke was recently gifted his first fish tank and Zebra Fish from one of my students...who is Luke's age and was determined that Luke needed some fish of his very own. She brought over this fish tank with pink pebbles in it...(it is her favorite color) and 5 fish from her own supply of fish that keep having babies. Well, we had the fish for just over a week and Toby and Luke decided the fish needed some "manly" colors so changed out the pebbles to blue and added some "flashy tankweed". All was well when I left the house this evening to attend a dinner for mom's with kids with special needs. Upon my return I found my ever so sensitive Luke in tears. I asked what was wrong and he pointed into the direction of his fish..and could barely get the words out, "Zipper died" along with two other ones he had not figured out names for yet. Oh man, here we go. Isn't there a chapter in Parenting 101 on this kind of thing?? Luke sobbed while I promised more fish... What to do?? :)

Then Luke pulls out one of his famous one liners and proceeds to tell us, in a very serious manner, "I can't even say Zipper's name...I feel like Abraham Lincoln, when his mom died from milk sickness he was so sad he could not even say her name". Okay, so seriously...how can you not crack up...I had to hide my face in my hands and walk out of the room. But, on the other hand...good for Luke, apparently my son listens up in class because I did not even know that info on honest Abe.

So, you know where you can find us tomorrow after school...the fish store. Sorry you didn't make it Zipper!

RIP Zipper :( Cheri, the trick is to pick out a generic looking fish. When that fish kicks the bucket, you then replace it (before child notices). This obviously only works if said child is not around when the fish dies.
Poor Luke...it's so hard to lose a pet....even just a little fish :(

(of course the mom in me is busting up because of what he said....he is such a smart little guy :) )

Awe Zipper! Mason got a fish over the weekend too ... we got a beta since you pretty much can't kill those things, although I'm a little worried here since half of the bottle of food has already gone in the water. Sigh. We were gonna buy a goldfish but they told us goldfish needed filtered tanks to live so ...

LOL

Cute, Luke! Sad part of growing up, of course. But cute!

Oh dear. We lost a pet lamb last year (we live in NZ remember- more sheep than people!). I was quite upset, but Ben was just glad it was Emily's lamb and not his! Kids!

Poor fishie! The day you posted this, we had just talked about getting fish for the boys. Hope Luke likes his new friend!

That's really funny . . . and reminds me so much of my boys. Micah can be SO dramatic - and I'm still taken aback by how much Reid looks like Matthew in all the pictures. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I've been enjoying your blog.

I'm SO sorry about Zipper. Maybe the plants and new rocks needed washed off first? Who know, fish are hard for me. I gave up on the Betas after killing three of them. Adalynn got a goldfish last week too. It's name changes everyday to whatever she feels like for that day. :)
Love to all

I don't mean to laugh, I am sure losing Zipper was a tramatic thing for your household, but that Ab story is about the funniest thing I have ever heard!!

We have fish for this very reason :). I lost a pet dog Heidi about the same age as your oldest son and it was heartbreaking for me and has stayed with me to this day. But animals help teach us about the circle of life, good opportunity for little life lessons!
Miss your posts!!!
Hope you are all well!
